I’m a bit of a gamer. I have a custom built PC with pretty rainbow lights and spend way too much time trying to climb the ranks of competitive games. So when the Australian Navy tasked us with creating a game to recruit more Submariners, I definitely got excited. But with any Defence job comes a mountain of no-no’s — fair enough, it’s a super classified role that deal in Top Secret stuff.

What we created was The Mission. A text-based game that simulated the excitement and drama of working onboard a Navy submarine, without giving away any Navy secrets. And it was all run on the world’s most powerful graphics engine — the human imagination. After writing a literal novel’s worth of copy, and jazzing it up with some interactive elements, we kept an audience of 15,000 users engaged for an average of 26 minutes, with 25% of players returning to replay the game.
